Our Intensive Outpatient Programs Fit Your Lifestyle

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Individuals recovering from substance use disorder (SUD) and co-occurring mental health disorders go through multiple levels of care before transitioning out of treatment.

Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) provide essential support during early recovery. According to Psychiatric Services, “IOPs are alternatives to inpatient and residential treatment . . . designed to establish psychosocial supports and facilitate relapse management and coping strategies.” Avery Lane offers multiple treatment programs, including IOP and other outpatient services.

What Is Intensive Outpatient Treatment?

IOPs offer comprehensive services as a step down from residential care or a partial hospitalization program (PHP). Clients spend a significant amount of time throughout the week in individual and group therapy or attending other forms of treatment. IOPs only offer services throughout the day, allowing clients to return home at night and on the weekends.

    Individuals who attend IOP include:

    • Clients transitioning out of detox, residential, or PHP programs
    • Alumni requiring temporary support during crisis moments
    • Individuals who need a step up from outpatient programs or aftercare
    • Clients are given the tools to process trauma and other co-occurring issues
IOPs allow women in recovery to interact with peers during weekly therapy sessions. Peer engagement is a vital part of recovery. According to Substance Abuse and Rehabilitation, “Active engagement in peer support groups has shown to be a key predictor of recovery, and sustaining recovery.” Avery Lane offers group therapy and community support to women in IOP.

    Who Benefits Most From IOP?

IOP is most helpful for individuals who have moderate symptoms. Women with a limited support system or lack of healthy coping skills also benefit from intensive outpatient services. The care team uses evidence-based therapies to ensure women in treatment have the resources and tools to balance their mental health, sobriety, and personal responsibilities during IOP.

IOPs provide clients with additional freedom and schedule flexibility compared to higher levels of care. Many people work or attend school while participating in IOP. A few primary advantages of IOPs include the adaptability of treatment and weekly skills training. According to the previously mentioned article in Psychiatric Services, “IOP goals help the individual learn early-stage relapse management and coping strategies, ensure that the person has psychosocial support, and address individual symptoms and needs.”

IOP and the Importance of Community Support

IOPs offer more comprehensive services compared to outpatient programs. Clients become part of a welcoming community where peers and clinicians work together to create a positive healing environment. Avery Lane prioritizes community engagement and support. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), “By building community trust and relationships, community engagement may benefit substance use prevention by promoting implementation of evidence-based practices (EBPs).”

Community engagement at Avery Lane is based on the following principles:

    • Compassion
    • Empathy
    • Transparency
    • Honesty

Clinicians tailor IOP to the unique needs of each client. Families are encouraged to participate in their loved one’s recovery and become part of the vibrant sober community of peers, alumni, allies, support staff, and clinicians at Avery Lane.

What to Expect From an IOP

IOPs offer clients access to psychotherapy, group therapy, support groups, prescription medications, skill development, recovery resources, and a reliable support system. Clients at Avery Lane spend hours throughout the week attending tailored therapy sessions designed to educate and help women find healthy ways to manage their condition.

Women in treatment have access to the following IOP services:

    • Day-treatment one to three days a week
    • Individual therapy once a week
    • Medical and psychiatric support, including medication management

Time at home provides clients with excellent opportunities to practice the therapeutic techniques and coping skills they learn in treatment. In addition, the community at Avery Lane helps women in recovery improve their self-esteem and self-confidence.

    Intensive Outpatient Program Services

Intensive outpatient services are designed to provide clients with maximum individual support and guidance while allowing women to integrate the skills they learn into their everyday routines. According to SAMHSA, “Studies have collectively shown that IOP programs improve abstinence rates, reduce SUD symptom severity, and decrease frequency of substance use.” Clients and their families are encouraged to work with the care team to develop healthier relationships and routines during early recovery.

Gender-specific care ensures women and their loved ones fully understand how to address gender-specific issues related to SUD, including:

    • Gender-specific treatment
    • Individualized treatment planning and care
    • Case management
    • Alternative holistic therapies
    • Evidence-based therapies
    • Program curriculum designed specifically for women
    • Comprehensive family support services

Avery Lane understands the importance of providing high-quality care to women experiencing SUD and co-occurring mental health disorders. Programs have a limited number of participants to ensure clients benefit from more one-on-one time with clinicians.

We were all so fortunate to find Avery Lane when our daughter was at a low point. An initial diagnosis was confirmed by staff and the time spent there in recovery was very beneficial to both our daughter and ourselves. Our daughter was able to find out why she was behaving the way she was and was given many tools to help her recovery.

My daughter chose to go to Avery Lane because it was founded by a woman, run by women and only treated women. It gave her a safe sanctuary to heal as well as peace of mind for us, her parents, who did not want her in a co-ed treatment program."
