Helping Women Safely Detox
Residential Drug & Alcohol Detox
Treatment for substance use disorder (SUD) starts with detoxification. Clients undergo a comprehensive admissions assessment to determine what treatment service will provide them with the best support during detox and withdrawal from alcohol or other substances.
Avery Lane helps women safely detox from substances using evidence-based methods, including prescription medications and psychotherapy. Clinicians stabilize clients and ensure they have access to essential support services to reduce the effects of detox and withdrawal.
What Is Detoxification?
The detoxification process rids the body of any lingering trace of addictive substances. Symptoms may last from several days to several weeks. Detox is an essential start of recovery and allows the body to begin healing. Clinicians can more accurately diagnose co-occurring disorders after detox. According to studies from SAMSHA.gov, “Many psychiatrists agree that diagnoses for comorbid psychiatric conditions cannot be made until patients have been detoxified from abused substances and observed in a drug-free condition for 3 to 4 weeks since many withdrawal symptoms mimic those of psychiatric disorders.” Avery Lane offers comprehensive residential detox for individuals recovering from substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders.
Do All Substances Require Professional Detox Programs?
Professional detox programs do more than offer medical supervision and treatments. Clients also use these programs to do the following:
- Remain accountable for abstaining from drugs and alcohol
- Establish emotional stability using behavioral and cognitive therapies
- Replace maladaptive routines, behaviors, and coping skills with healthy alternatives
- Build a solid support system of peers, clinicians, family members, and support staff
Many people relapse during detox if they do not have adequate supervision or emotional support. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), “Detoxification alone without subsequent treatment generally leads to resumption of drug use.” Individuals who try to detox at home have an increased risk of relapsing and experiencing severe side effects. Relapsing during or after detox is very dangerous. Even detoxing from seemingly mild disorders like marijuana use disorder (MUD) may be highly destabilizing for some individuals. Professional detox programs are the best and safest way to transition off of any addictive substance.

Symptoms People Experience During Detoxification
The symptoms of detox vary significantly depending on multiple factors, including:
- Client age and general health
- Type of substance misused
- How many substances were misused
- Dose of substance(s)
- Co-occurring mental health disorders
Detox may include a range of mild to severe symptoms including:
- Vomiting, nausea, stomach pain or discomfort, and other gastrointestinal issues
- Excessive sweating
- Extreme mood swings
- Episodes of anxiety or depression
- Sleep disturbances
- Extreme irritability
- Body aches
- Headaches or migraines
- Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
- Intensive cravings
- Intrusive thoughts
- Shaking or muscle tremors
- Appetite changes
Symptoms may last from a few days to weeks or months, depending on how a person responds to treatment. In most cases, mental health symptoms linger the longest. Some people may experience post-acute withdrawal syndrome (PAWS). According to the urnal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, symptoms of PAWS may include “anxiety, depression, irritability, cognitive dysfunction, cravings for alcohol [or drugs], sleep disturbance, fatigue, and autonomic irregularities.” Depending on the individual, symptoms may last from several weeks to years. Therapy, medication, and other forms of treatment help people successfully manage PAWS.
Benefits of Detox Treatment
Residential detox programs provide women with a safe and welcoming environment during withdrawal. Some of the primary benefits of detox programs include:
- Structure and a daily schedule to keep clients focused on healing
- Access to an empowering community of women in recovery
- Decreased distractions
- Access to medical supervision and more comprehensive services
Women often have more tasks around the home compared to men on top of work, school, or other life responsibilities. Residential detox allows women to step away from worrying about those responsibilities while they heal from the effects of substance abuse.

Medication-Assisted Treatments During Detoxification
Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is sometimes necessary to help people transition safely off dangerous addictive substances. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) “has approved several different medications to treat alcohol use disorders (AUD) and opioid use disorders (OUD).” The FDA has determined that “These medications relieve the withdrawal symptoms and psychological cravings that cause chemical imbalances in the body.” MAT ensures clients detox from alcohol and opioids safely.
Most people who require MAT services to safely taper off dangerous substances benefit from attending a higher level of care and transitioning to Avery Lane once they have tapered off all substances.
Holistic Treatments During Detox
The clinicians at Avery Lane have decades of combined experience helping women recover from withdrawal and the effects of detox. Holistic therapies and evidence-based therapeutic modalities play an essential role in treating withdrawal symptoms. Clinicians use holistic services, including naturopathic assessment and IV vitamin therapy, to support women’s physical health during detox and withdrawal. Clients are given the information and resources they need to make educated decisions about their health.
Detox is the first stage of treatment for individuals recovering from substance abuse.
