What is PHP at Avery Lane

Mental Health

When you think of going to rehab, you probably think about staying at a center for weeks or months. There’s detox, therapy, and you spend every minute focused on getting better. For a lot of people, this is the reality of receiving treatment, and it can be extremely beneficial. But is it the right path for everyone? For those who have moved on from residential treatment or don’t require it, a partial hospitalization program (PHP) could be a good option.

What Is a PHP?

A PHP is a structured and comprehensive mental health treatment option. It is designed to provide intensive care to individuals dealing with severe mental health challenges and/or substance use disorder (SUD). PHPs provide you with comprehensive care while allowing you to return to your home or supportive environment at the end of each day. It is an intermediate level of care that falls between inpatient treatment and outpatient therapy, catering to individuals who require more than weekly outpatient sessions but do not need round-the-clock monitoring.

In a PHP, you can engage in a range of therapeutic activities and interventions. These may include group therapy, individual counseling, psychoeducation, medication management, and holistic interventions such as art therapy or mindfulness exercises. Most programs typically operate for several hours each day, often five days a week. This offers participants a structured routine that helps foster stability and support recovery.

One of the main goals of a PHP is to provide intensive treatment in a less restrictive environment than full residential treatment. It allows you to maintain connections with family, work, and other social networks. This approach provides a smoother transition back into your everyday life. Gaining back a sense of freedom and independence is crucial for building self-esteem through your recovery journey. PHPs are particularly beneficial for people with acute symptoms or for individuals transitioning out of inpatient care, offering a step-down level of support as they regain their independence and coping skills.

Treatment provided in a PHP can be tailored to your needs. It can focus on addressing the specific challenges you face and building upon your strengths. The interdisciplinary treatment team, including therapists, psychiatrists, nurses, and other professionals, collaborates to create a personalized treatment plan and monitor your progress.

In essence, a PHP bridges the gap between intensive inpatient care and less frequent outpatient therapy. It offers a comprehensive and flexible approach to mental health and SUD treatment. These types of programs serve as a crucial resource for people who grapple with severe mental health issues and substance misuse issues, helping them regain stability, learn coping skills, and work toward long-term recovery while maintaining connections to their support systems.

Who Is PHP for?

PHPs cater to a diverse range of individuals who require intensive support. Clients with severe mental health conditions and SUD benefit significantly who have completed residential treatment benefit significantly, as the program offers structured treatment without full hospitalization. Transitioning from inpatient care, you’ll find that PHP is a bridge to resuming daily life while maintaining progress. Its focused approach aids those with acute symptoms like suicidal thoughts, intense anxiety, and urges to use substances, providing daily therapeutic interventions.

For those without supportive home environments, a PHP can be a stabilizing force, offering therapy and a sense of community. Young adults may benefit, in particular, as their developing brains crave structure and social connection. Routine and discipline are also important at this stage of life. PHPs also foster connections between clients, which can help with feelings of isolation. Young adults who experience depression and anxiety can be vulnerable to feelings of loneliness. No matter your age, however, if you’re dealing with mental health and addiction challenges, PHPs can help you gain targeted care and skill-building opportunities.

Comprehensive treatment and relapse prevention strategies in PHP can support individuals battling substance abuse. Clients needing frequent therapeutic engagement appreciate daily sessions without the confines of full hospitalization. The sense of community and shared understanding fostered in a PHP can help battle feelings of shame brought on by social stigma. This type of program also allows SUD clients to spend time with their families and friends at the end of the day, which is so often a barrier to residential treatment.

A PHP serves as a middle ground for those who do not require 24/7 care but need more than traditional outpatient therapy. The program’s integrated approach is also valuable for those with co-occurring disorders, addressing mental health and addiction concurrently. People seeking to enhance coping skills, communication, and emotional regulation benefit from the program’s focused and intensive approach. Ultimately, a PHP caters to those who need structured, comprehensive support to regain stability, build resilience, and work toward lasting well-being.

Can I Go Right to PHP and Skip Residential Treatment?

Yes, it is possible to skip residential treatment and go straight into a PHP. However, it is not recommended if you are struggling with severe mental health problems or SUD that requires detox. Residential treatment offers a controlled environment that gives you time to stabilize and create a foundation for lasting recovery. In some cases, skipping this step can lead to an increased risk of relapse.

If your mental health issues or SUD are not severe, you may be able to go right to PHP. This might be a good path for you if you feel like you just need some extra help but don’t require the round-the-clock care that comes with residential treatment. Deciding what’s right for you is an important step that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Talk with people you trust and your case management team to decide what program works best for you.

Moreover, the scheduled activities instill discipline, breaking away from the chaotic and unpredictable patterns often associated with addiction.

Our program’s emphasis on skill-building activities equips clients with practical tools to navigate real-life situations. The repetition inherent in a structured routine aids in reinforcing learning and honing coping skills, making you more resilient to triggers and stressors post-treatment.

By establishing a structured framework, Avery Lane’s PHP offers a sense of purpose and achievement. Life Skills Support

Life skills play a pivotal role in the rehabilitation and recovery process of patients within a PHP. At Avery Lane, our PHP not only focuses on addressing your immediate mental health concerns but also equips you with essential life skills that are instrumental in managing your well-being and transitioning back to your daily life. These skills offer numerous benefits, fostering greater independence, resilience, and overall quality of life.

Life skills training is individualized for each person at Avery Lane, but some of the skills you may be able to learn include:

  • Communication skills
  • Time management
  • Organization
  • Problem-solving/critical thinking
  • Financial literacy and management
  • Leadership skills
  • Housekeeping/basic home repairs
  • Cooking
  • Writing
  • Technological skills
  • Job search skills (writing a cover letter and interviewing)

Let’s take a deeper look at some of the most important skills.

In our PHP, you may learn effective communication skills, which help you express your thoughts, emotions, and needs more clearly.  Improved communication makes you better able to articulate your mental health challenges. This is important for improved collaboration with mental health professionals, employers, and loved ones. Communication skills also aid in forming and maintaining healthy relationships, reducing misunderstandings and conflicts that can exacerbate stress and emotional turmoil.

Time management and organizational skills are equally vital. You will learn how to structure your days, prioritize tasks, and set achievable goals. These skills can help bolster your self-esteem as you accomplish tasks, whether related to treatment goals, work, or personal responsibilities. This is an invaluable tool for transitioning back into everyday life, as it can help you secure and keep a job. By managing your time effectively, you can alleviate stress, prevent overwhelm, and maintain a sense of control over your life.

Problem-solving skills are another cornerstone of life skills taught in PHPs. In this training, you’ll acquire the ability to analyze challenges, identify potential solutions, and make informed decisions. These skills can empower you to cope with unexpected setbacks and navigate life’s complexities with greater adaptability. This, in turn, can reduce the risk of relapse by offering healthier alternatives to coping mechanisms.

Financial management skills are particularly relevant as well. You’ll learn how to create budgets, manage expenses, and make informed financial decisions.  If you are recovering from SUD, you know that addiction can take a toll on your finances. The skills you learn here can help you get back on your feet. These skills foster financial stability, reducing stressors that can contribute to mental health difficulties. It can also give you a sense of empowerment over your circumstances.

There are a variety of other skills training that you can take during your time in Avery Lane’s PHP, depending on what your needs are for the future. Talk to your care team about your goals, and they can help set you up with the right coaches.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and psychotherapy are some of the evidence-based interventions utilized.
