Anthem’s Behavioral Health Coverage: What You Should Know

Anthem is part of the Blue Cross Blue Shield network and provides robust behavioral health benefits, thanks to mental health parity laws. This means your Anthem plan must cover mental health and substance use treatment just as it would physical health care.

At Avery Lane, women often seek support for anxiety, panic attacks, depression, suicidal thoughts, PTSD, trauma, bipolar disorder, mood swings, substance use (including alcohol, opioids, or methamphetamine), and co-occurring disorders that combine mental health and addiction.

Understanding Your Anthem Plan: Coverage Details That Matter

Plan Types and What They Mean

Anthem plans are categorized into metal levels, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum, each offering different balances between monthly premium costs and out-of-pocket expenses. Bronze plans typically have the lowest monthly premiums and higher deductibles, while Platinum plans provide the highest level of coverage with lower out-of-pocket costs.

In addition to the metal tiers, Anthem offers different plan structures:

  • PPO plans typically allow members to see both in-network and out-of-network providers without needing a referral.
  • HMO plans usually require members to stay within a defined provider network and obtain referrals for specialty care.
No matter your plan type, you do not need a referral to be admitted to Avery Lane. We handle the entire authorization process for you, including any paperwork your insurance might require.

Coming from Out of State? Anthem’s Blue Cross Network Makes It Possible

As a Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) affiliate, Anthem connects to a nationwide network that may allow members from other states to access care in California, depending on the plan type and benefits.

If you have a PPO plan, you may be able to use your out-of-network benefits to receive care at Avery Lane. Many out-of-state clients use this option to help cover the cost of residential treatment and behavioral health services.

If you’re covered under an HMO plan, options are more limited. While BCBS offers a Guest Membership program for temporary out-of-area care, California is not a participating state, so this program does not apply for treatment at our facility. However, in some cases, our team may be able to request a single-case agreement with your insurance provider if comparable women-specific care is not available in-network.

Every plan is different. We provide free insurance verification to help you understand what your out-of-state Anthem or BCBS plan may allow.

How Medical Necessity Works with Anthem

Anthem utilizes clinical criteria, including MCG and ASAM guidelines, to determine whether treatment is medically necessary. At Avery Lane, we work with Anthem to demonstrate:

  • Why residential or intensive care is needed
  • Your history of symptoms or relapse
  • Why lower levels of care may not be sufficient

We handle pre-authorizations, continued stay reviews, and, if necessary, appeals to make sure you receive the care you deserve. Most reviews are completed within 24–48 hours, and we continue advocating for coverage every step of the way.
